It’s About Respect

April 7, 2009

It’s being reported that the workers who ran a “fight club” at Corpus Christi State School had little in the way of educational or professional experience:

The former Texas institution staffers accused of encouraging “fight club” style brawls among residents had little job experience outside of fast food restaurants before being hired to the facility for people with disabilities. None had education beyond a high school diploma or GED.

While this does call into question their ability to perform their jobs (along with the competence of the managers who hired them), it hardly seems relevant to the specific offense. You don’t need a degree to treat people with respect, nor can a certain number of years in any profession guarantee empathy for every human being.
