Unleashing Muslim Women

April 10, 2009

ramadan33121As the transnational forces of globalization engulf the globe, the national has now become the international and the private has expanded into the public. The result being an unprecedented cross-cultural integration, whereby it is near impossible to overlook the patriarchal and un-egalitarian social structures that have been instituted in certain Islamic societies to foster the prevalence of women’s repression on the bandwagon of the religion; Islam.

In the next few articles, I will be examining modernization, westernization, Islamic fundamentalists and Islamic feminists to demonstrate the complexity with which women’s rights are intertwined between the state, the religion and the law. Through this analysis, I hope to establish the necessity of disarming the actual agents behind women’s subordination in Islamic states and free Islam of this generalization.

I will be investigating the rights that have been afforded to women through Islam and highlighting their homogeneity with the International human rights standards; to reinstate my earlier claim; women’s subordination in Islamic societies is not intrinsic to the religion.

Whenever the question of women’s rights is raised in Islamic societies, it is very conveniently put on hold against other more politically relevant state objectives. However, the urgency of settling these claims needs to be established, such that Muslim women can be freed from the jaws of patriarchy, injustice and violence and given the opportunity to live in peace and with dignity.

Let us unveil all forces to unleash Muslim women; let us give them a voice, so they can be heard.

If any do deeds of righteousness, be they male or female, and have faith, they will enter Paradise and not the least injustice will be done to them (Quran 4:124).

In fair manner women have the same rights against their men as men have against them (Quran 2:226)

I look forward to reading this Maria. I would be interested in hearing your thought about the imperial imposition of the European nation-state system in Islamic areas.
