Carol Ann Duffy Named UK Poet Laureate

May 2, 2009

Carol Ann DuffyTen years after Tony Blair nixed her nomination for the position because of his concerns about her sexuality (read: his concerns about the effects of bigotry on his political future—and note also that reports of this have been officially denied), Carol Ann Duffy has become the first woman, first lesbian, and first Scot to hold the position of UK Poet Laureate. This array of firsts is especially stunning when you consider how long the position has been around.

You can read four of her poems online at famouspoetsandpoems.com
