Mark Your Calendar: International Day Against Homophobia

May 14, 2009

no_bordersThis Sunday, May 17, is the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO). Established in 2003 by Canada’s Fondation Émergence, the day recognizes the prejudices and violence encountered by LGBT people around the world in an effort to end that discrimination. The day is always held on May 17, the anniversary of when the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its International Classification of Diseases in 1992.

To show your support for ending homophobia worldwide, you can sign the petition. You can also click here to read about ways to recognize IDAHO in your community.

If you know about events in your area taking place this Sunday in recognition of IDAHO, leave them in the comments!

(Completely coincidentally, this Sunday is also the five-year anniversary of marriage equality in Massachusetts!)
