This Just In: Honduran President Vetoes Ban on EC

I’ve just learned that the President of Honduras, in a surprising turn of events, has VETOED the dreaded bill passed by Congress last month that would have completely banned the sale, use, promotion or, purchase or distribution of emergency contraception.  This is a victory for women’s rights, and a victory for science!  Women’s groups on the ground like Centro de Derechos de Mujeres (CDM) and the Latin American Consortium on Emergency Contraception worked tirelessly to convey the facts about EC and it’s importance as a contraceptive method in a country with a high rate of unintended pregnancy and unsafe abortion.

While this is excellent news, it will take continued vigilance and pressure to make sure that women’s health and rights are recognized in policies in Honduras and throughout Latin America.  Check out the websites of feminist orgs like Centro de Derechos de Mujeres and Colectivo Feminista Mujeres Universitarias for more updates and info.
