Iconic Images: Pro-Condom PSA in India

August 5, 2009

Another marker of a changing India, this image shows a public service announcement advocating condom use in a red light district of Khalpara. In the background is an unidentified sex worker. Jezebel reports that as a part of the Hindu festival Raksha Bandhan, volunteers from the organization Durbar Mahila Samannay Samiti tie rahkis (sacred threads) around the wrists of other sex workers.

Ads like these are all over West Bengal, not just in Khalpara (Siliguri). There’s one just like this near College Street in Kolkata. The ad reads (roughly): “Although you might enjoy it without a condom, if you get HIV, it can’t be cured.”
