Women Deliver: Question to Ponder

June 7, 2010

The Women Deliver conference (www.womendeliver.org), is running June 7-9 2010 and the GAB team is present! It is a global meeting on maternal and reproductive health and the advancement of women and girls. Tune in today, tomorrow, and Wednesday for live updates directly from the conference floor.

Christiane Amanpour, a reporter and international correspondent, asked this morning’s panel whether it was a good idea to put out the Lancet study that maternal mortality is decreasing (i.e. will this lead to less funding from governments for maternal health matters)?

Thoraya Obaid, the Executive Director of UNFPA, responded that “if one woman dies of preventable causes, then it is one too much.” She added that the Lancet study shows that money and funding works and that when we see results, we should invest in scaling up.
